The Little Heartbeats Whelping Den has been developed by breeders for breeders to simulate the closed, warm, dark, and hidden place where the canine species have given birth to their young throughout history. If left to their own devices, most dogs that have the luxury of being inside pets and family members will choose the back of a closet under anything that is piled up on the floor. Another favorite spot is underneath a bed. A friend of ours found her puppies had been carefully hidden inside of a hole in a tree by the mother for lack of a better place at the time.

At least two weeks before the babies come, the pregnant dog will start searching for a secure and private place to give birth. Her instincts tell her to hide her pups from predators, not to have them on display in an open kiddie swimming pool. The Little Heartbeats Whelping Den was designed to provide instant acceptance by the mother dog. She peeks in the door and discovers exactly the environment she is seeking to have her babies. It is warm, dark, comfortable, and has nesting material already inside. It's kind of like the difference between having your

baby in a private birthing suite at the hospital or on a stretcher out in the drafty hallway with everybody walking past coughing germs on you and your newborn.

The Little Heartbeats Whelping Den consists of heavy duty 16" or 24" sides that won't flex or bend when the dog or helper leans on them. The walls are completely covered in white melamine and sealed for an easy-to-clean, germ-free surface. The uprights that hold the sides together are extended upward and connect with a wooden frame that supports the double sided polar fleece top that completely encloses the den into a cube. The fleece holds the heat so well that one or two heating pads (depending on the size of the box and the number of puppies)

will be all you need. No heat lamp is necessary. When you use a lamp for warming, the puppies could dehydrate, because they can't escape the heat. The best source of heat for the new babies is their mother, but she will not stay in the box if she can't move away from the heat.

The front of the box has a drop-down or side-opening door with hinges and a latch, so that the mother can come and go as she needs to, but the babies will be too small to navigate the step-over for a while. The fleece top has a corresponding flap opening so the dog can enter and exit without letting cold air into the Den.

Wood safety rails are included with the Whelping Den. They are very sturdy, but completely quick release for emergency removal or daily cleaning, which is easy because they are coated with three coats of non-toxic paint. The rails should be put in place so that you can familiarize yourself with the process, and the dog will not be disturbed by them later. Leave the rails out before and during the whelping of the pups, unless the dog will be left home alone as her due date approaches. She will be nesting and moving about restlessly, and when the contractions start, she will need room to stretch out.
